To provide support to the W.H. Miner Engineering Department on projects which may include stress analysis, FEA, test procedure recommendations and field test support.


  • Perform test conductor duties, stress analysis, and data reduction/analysis.
  • Design test fixtures and/or test machines and create associated engineering documentation.
  • Provide engineering liaison between the Research & Development department and the other departments.
  • Assist in contract testing efforts, including cost quoting of man hours, material, and equipment.
  • Recommend new equipment and procedures toward enhancing and expanding the Research & Development capabilities.
  • Participate in sensitive customer interactions.

Education and / or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in stress and test engineering.
  • Prior work experience should include designing of load frames and associated test fixtures; use of mechanical static load test and cycle machines; knowledge of data acquisition systems, machine control systems and electronic transducer basics.  Some exposure to electrical and electronic background will be a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). 
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills that promote positive working relationships. 
  • Must be analytical, organized, and able to multi-task. 
  • Must be proficient in SolidWorks, FEA software as well as MS Office.
  • Knowledge of machine control systems helpful.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to intermittently sit/stand for various duties.
  • Ability to climb stairs to R&D Office area, test track, etc.
  • Ability to climb/crawl in, on, under and around railcars.  This includes being able to wear appropriate safety harness for being on top of the railcar, as needed.
  • Ability to perform computer work.
  • Ability to walk in plant, bend and stoop.
  • Ability to lift, or move, up to 40 lbs.

Currently, we are looking for a CAD Drafter/Designer to join our team in Geneva, IL. This team member support our engineering initiatives in delivering customer centered products by preparing CAD drawings and sketches from marked prints and verbal descriptions.  This team member will:

  • Works with Project Engineers to understand functional requirements of the product to be designed.
  • Prepares engineering drawings and sketches.
  • Translate engineering sketches.
  • Operates CAD software including solid modeling.
  • Files engineering drawings and documents.
  • Design layouts.
  • Transfer notes into 3D models and finished drawings conforming to our Drafting Procedures.
  • Complies with all Engineering and Quality procedures. 

Qualified candidates for this position will have an Associates Degree in Engineering Technology with 2-3 years experience as a CAD Drafter/Designer or 5-10 years experience as a CAD Drafter/Designer.  Experience must include a solid working knowledge of Solidworks 3-D modeling software.  In addition,

  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment will be viewed favorably.
  • Mechanical aptitude to run simple tests and review data.
  • Must be analytical, organized, and able to multi-task. 
  • Ability to communicate in an effective and professional manner to both internal and external customers. Good interpersonal skills.
  • Solid working knowledge of MS Excel (MS Office).
  • Experience with DB Works will be viewed favorably.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Manage design and development projects for new products for railcar unloading devices.  This includes determining customer requirements, concept development, testing and analysis, prototyping and preparing drawings.
  • Participate, as needed, in field application and support of products.
  • Make technical presentations to customers.
  • Examine customer requirements and make application recommendations for existing products.
  • Provide support to Sales, Technical Services, Production, Purchasing, Vendors and Customers.


  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering with a minimum of 1 year of experience.  Candidates with only a degree and internship will be considered.  Previous experience in project management is favorable, but optional.
  • Proficiency in solid modeling.
  • Mechanical aptitude with a general understanding of electronics, pneumatics and hydraulics.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Willingness to travel, at times on short notice.
  • Ability to examine product in the field, involving crawling under railcars.
